Upon his arrival in Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with a vibrant Bhojpuri Chautaal performance. This marked his inaugural official visit to the Caribbean nation, where he engaged with the local Indian community and acknowledged their significant role in the nation's progress. In a post shared on X, PM Modi expressed his joy, stating, 'A cultural connect like no other! Very happy to have witnessed a Bhojpuri Chautaal performance in Port of Spain. The bond between Trinidad & Tobago and India, particularly from eastern UP and Bihar, is remarkable.' He also shared a video capturing the essence of the cultural performance, noting, 'Bhojpuri Chautaal echoes in Trinidad & Tobago!'
Acknowledging the Indian Diaspora
During his visit, PM Modi met with members of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago, commending their contributions to the country's development. He remarked on how the community has not only excelled in various sectors but has also maintained a strong connection to their Indian roots. 'Many individuals from India arrived in Trinidad & Tobago years ago. Over time, they have made their mark in numerous fields, enriching the development journey of Trinidad & Tobago while staying connected to Indian culture. I am thankful to the local Indian community for their warm welcome in Port of Spain,' he stated on X.
Engaging with Young Achievers
PM Modi also highlighted his interaction with Shankar Ramjattan, Nicholas Maraj, and Vince Mahato, who emerged as winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz in Trinidad and Tobago. He noted, 'Met youngsters Shankar Ramjattan, Nicholas Maraj, and Vince Mahato, who are winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz in Trinidad & Tobago. This initiative has seen extensive participation globally and has strengthened the connection of our diaspora with India.'
Significance of the Visit
This visit marks PM Modi's first trip to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister and is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Caribbean nation since 1999. The trip was made at the invitation of Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Upon arrival, PM Modi was welcomed by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, along with 38 ministers and four Members of Parliament from the Caribbean nation. He received a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Piarco International Airport.
